Shalom Community Hospital has attracted bad publicity in the recent past putting in damper in one of oldest private hospitals in Kenya. The hospital was established in 1984 in a rented house in Mutituni by Dr. Fredrick Jairus Aila Onyango and Mrs Benter Onyango. Through the vision of the founders, the clinic growth was on an upward trajectory and in 1992 it upgraded to Dr. Onyango’s Maternity & Nursing Home. In 1998, Shalom Hospital Machakos was born followed by Athi River Shalom Community Hospital.

The hospital was closed after a seven-month-old baby Ethan Muendo died in the hands of an untrained hospital attendant. According to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB), baby Ethan was injected with a dose of morphine that was 20 times stronger than what his body could handle.
This came shortly after a video went viral on social media of a mother giving birth in the hospital reception as nurses looked on undisturbed. Social media users accused the hospital of unprofessionalism as past patients narrated their ordeal in the hands of the nurses.

Re-opened
Shalom Hospital Machakos was reopened after satisfying KMPDB investigators with the changes that had been instituted by the management. The hospital had been closed for three weeks following the death of baby Ethan.
