The current St Mary’s Yala principal is Mr. Bonaventure Okoth Ollando who assumed the coveted position in 2016. He has kept the tradition of the school almost intact as the school continues to post good results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and excel in extra-curricular activities. Mr Ollando has St Mary’s blood running in his veins-he was a student at the institution, then a teacher and rose to become a deputy headteacher before succeeding Mr John Awiti who retired on 19th September 2016 as the principal.
St Mary’s Yala Performance
This is one of the best performing extra-county high schools in Nyanza. In the 2019 KCSE examination, Yala scored a mean grade of 7.3942 (C+) and performed better in 2020 examinations with a mean score of 7.4 (C+).
Extra-curricular activities
St Mary’s Yala is a rugby powerhouse. The school has produced quality players who have gone to play for the national team and top clubs in the country. One such player is Steve Odhiambo who plies his trade for Nondies. The player told Scrummage that he joined the sport in his second year at St Mary’s. He told the online publication:
“I joined the game while in St.Mary’s Yala in my second year….”
“The late Tim Okullu was my coach. I got encouraged to join it by my peers. Initially, I was a footballer but going to football was not making any sense because of playing in the second or third team.”
Other notable players include: Trevor Ayombe, Paul Mugalo, David Ambunya, Lavin Asego, Eden Agero, Patrice Agunda among many others. In 2003, the school was crowned rugby winners nationally and came third in 2017.
The school has done well in other sports as well. Apart from sports, the school is well known for having a vibrant drama and music clubs that have performed well at the national level.

The current BOG chairman is Mr Prof George Magoha while the PTA equal is Mr Fred Omulo.
