Ten Tallest Buildings In Mombasa And The Architects Who Designed Them

Mombasa city is the second largest and oldest urban city in Kenya. Situated along the shores of the Indian Ocean, this city is home to some of the tallest buildings in Kenya. With its main revenue coming from tourism, investors have in recent years flocked to this city to invest in hotels, lodgings and residential apartments. This has in turn led to the rise of new tall and modern buildings in this coastal city. In this article, we highlight some of the tallest buildings in Mombasa and the architects who build them.

Bima Towers

Bima towers or Pandya house is one of the tallest buildings in Mombasa reaching up to 220 feets or 67.056 meters above sea level. The building which houses government offices is situated along Digo road just next to Posta Kenya. It was constructed in the year 1982 by an American firm by the name Twinlight Company limited. The 16 story building is home to different offices such as the Department of Trade, Tourism and Investment.

Mombasa Trade Center

The Mombasa Trade Center famously known as the Central tower or Ambalal House is in the list of the tallest buildings in Mombasa. The high-rise building is located along Nkrumah road off Mikindani Street and opposite Mount Kenya University (MKU) Building. The building was completed in 1981 and reaches up to 144 feet or 44.0 meters above sea level. The 13 floor building which was designed and built by MMC Africa limited is a commercial property that houses restaurants, shops and other businesses.

Kizingo Towers

Kizingo towers is another tall building reaching  81.44 meters above sea level. The groundbreaking of the building began in 2014 and was brought to completion in 2017 when it was available for use by the public. It serves as a commercial plaza, residential place and also has a section of high-end offices available. The 22 floors high-rise building was constructed by A.D. Designs Architects. There is an ongoing Phase 2 project of other Kizingo residential towers being undertaken by Husrah Consultants Limited as engineers, Dhaby Architects and associates as the lead Architect and Premvee builders as the Contractors.

Jaffery Complex

Jaffery complex joins the list of the tallest buildings in Mombasa. The building reaches up to 79 meters above sea level and was completed in late 2019. The building has 20 floors and is mainly used as a residential place carrying three-bedroom and four-bedroom houses. The tower which is located along Mtwapa road was constructed by Nadeem Builders Limited.

Aum Towers

The list of tallest buildings in Mombasa couldn’t be complete without Aum towers. Located near the posh neighbourhoods of Nyali, this building reaches up to 79 meters above sea level. The 22 floor building is the headquarter of the Aum Insurance Brokers Limited. The building which was completed in 2020 was designed by Manish Solankis Architects.

Likoni Towers

Likoni towers is also among the tallest buildings in Mombasa. Located along Nyerere Avenue, this building primarily serves as a residential place. The 16 high-rise story building was constructed by Masta D-signs Limited in conjunction with Mastacad Designs and interiors. The building reaches up to 71 meters above sea level and offers two-bedrooms, three-bedroom and four-bedroom houses to let.

Ocean View Residency

Ocean View Residency is a high-rise building that serves as a residential place. It is located along Mwamba Avenue and reaches up to 70.33 meters above sea level. The construction of the building began in 2017 and was brought to completion in late 2019. It has 19 floors and was constructed by Marriott IPS architects.

Ganjoni Towers

Ganjoni towers is located at the heart of Mombasa city along Sauti ya Kenya road. The building which reaches up to 59.23 meters above sea level was constructed from 2015 to 2017 by Southern Engineering Company Limited. The building has 16 floors and is used as a commercial plaza for shops and offices as well as a residential place.

TSS Towers

TSS Towers is among the most famous and tallest buildings in Mombasa. The building reaches up to 59.2 meters above sea level and was brought to completion in the 1990s. It is a high-rise building with 16 floors which are mainly used as commercial spaces and offices. It is located opposite Cathedral Catholic Church along Nkrumah Road, Mombasa.

Cannon Towers

Cannon Towers closes the list of top ten tallest buildings in Mombasa as of January 2022. The building is one of the city’s landmarks and reaches up to 49 meters above sea level. The building which has 13 floors was constructed by Sendrum II Limited Company and offers retail and office spaces to the public. It is located along the famous Moi Avenue next to CMC Motors.
