The National Assembly is currently debating the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following a motion introduced by MP Mwengi Mutuse.
The motion cites 11 grounds for impeachment, including allegations of corruption, tribalism, and undermining government policies.
Gachagua, who has denied the accusations as politically motivated, will defend himself during the session.
For the impeachment to succeed, a two-thirds majority in the assembly is required.
If impeached, Gachagua would be replaced by a nominee from President William Ruto within 14 days, subject to National Assembly approval within 60 days.
Potential successors include Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru among others.
1. Kithure Kindiki
According to a recent TIFA survey, 37% of Kenyans believe that Kindiki should succeed Gachagua as deputy president if Gachagua is impeached.
This sentiment reflects a significant level of support for Kindiki amidst the ongoing impeachment discussions, where 41% of respondents support Gachagua’s removal.
The survey indicates that public awareness of the impeachment motion is high, with 78% of Kenyans informed about it.
Kindiki’s potential ascension appears favorable among those dissatisfied with Gachagua’s leadership, particularly in light of the allegations against him.
2. Musalia Mudavadi
Mudavadi’s potential to succeed Gachagua as Deputy President is influenced by recent TIFA survey findings, which show a significant public preference for him.
The survey indicates that 5% of respondents favor Mudavadi over Gachagua, who has faced impeachment proceedings and allegations of corruption and misconduct.
This political turmoil surrounding Gachagua may enhance Mudavadi’s appeal as a stable alternative, especially if Gachagua is removed from office.
Additionally, Mudavadi’s established political network and experience could position him favorably for the role if the current deputy is ousted.
3. Ndindi Nyoro
The TIFA survey indicates that Nyoro has a 5% likelihood of succeeding Gachagua as Deputy President if Gachagua is impeached.
Despite being seen as a significant political figure within Mt. Kenya, Nyoro’s support is notably limited compared to other candidates.
His political trajectory has been marked by a rivalry with Gachagua, but recent dynamics suggest he may be considered as a potential successor if the current Deputy President is removed.
4. Ann Waiguru
According to a TIFA survey, Waiguru has a notable chance of succeeding Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua if he is impeached.
Her political experience as the Governor of Kirinyaga and her leadership role in advocating for increased female representation in government bolster her profile.
Waiguru’s commitment to unity and development resonates with many, positioning her as a viable candidate in the evolving political scenario leading up to the 2027 elections.
