Dr. Timothy Kitui’s early exposure to music came from his upbringing in a deeply devout Christian family.

Immersed in church life from a young age, he discovered his musical talents in the Sunday school choir.

His natural leadership and choral organizational skills soon became evident, and he gradually rose to the role of a parish choirmaster.

However, his musical journey extended far beyond the church.

During his high school years, Dr. Kitui participated in Kenya Music Festivals, where he showcased his remarkable abilities as an English public speaker, a singer, and a proficient traditional instrument player.

At the core of Dr. Kitui’s musical identity lies a deep connection with the Litungu, a traditional lyre primarily associated with the Luhya ethnic group.

Growing up in a humble environment where traditional instruments were more accessible than modern ones, he honed his musical skills on this unique instrument.

Today, he is known by the brand “Litungu Gospel Vibes,” emphasizing his commitment to singing predominantly in the Luhya language and his profound connection to this traditional harp.

”I played Litungu. Litungu is a traditional lyre played by the Luhya ethnic group of Kenya (including the Bukusu subgroup). I sing my songs predominantly in Luhya and I go by the brand “Litungu Gospel Vibes” – a brand that is anchored on this traditional harp.”

Leaving behind a successful career in education and consultancy was a momentous decision for Dr. Kitui.

His choice to transition into a full-time music career was met with skepticism, even from his immediate family.

”Well, my father has ever threatened to denounce me because of pursuing music instead of conventional education. Clearly, at this time, I got immunized against rejection because of talent,” he recalled.

Despite holding a Ph.D. and being on a promising academic path, he chose to follow the calling of his heart and his passion for music.

This audacious decision challenged societal norms and personal expectations.

Dr. Kitui’s transition from the lecture hall to the stage was not initially financially lucrative.

Nevertheless, he remained unwavering in his pursuit, driven by an unshakable belief in his talent and his calling. His journey in music was fueled by an indomitable spirit of self-faith and an unwavering dare-do attitude.

His dedication and musical brilliance did not go unnoticed. Dr. Timothy Kitui has received numerous prestigious awards, including the RIGA Awards South Africa – Male Gospel Artist of the Year in Africa (Traditional Category) in 2016 and multiple Safaricom Groove Awards for Song of the Year in Western Counties.

Reflecting on his life journey, Dr. Timothy Kitui offers a powerful message to those who look up to him: “Everybody has a talent, nobody is an imitation of another, and we all are here for a purpose. When you discover yours, live it and live for it.”
