The amount of money A-list musicians from First World countries make in a single show is mind boggling. In 2016, American rhythm and blues singer Chris Brown was paid a staggering $900,000 (Kes90 million) for a 90 minute show in Kenya dubbed “Mombasa Rocks”. The promoter paid $350,000 down payment and a further $200,000 travel buyout. The remainder- $350,000-was paid when he landed in the coastal town. Then came Rick Ross in 2018. The Purple Lamborghini hit maker was reportedly paid $1 million to perform in Kenya capital Nairobi. Tickets were going for $100.
First class treatment
Apart from the handsome paycheck, organizers must arrange for “first class sound and lights, backline (audio amplification equipment), catering and hospitality, adequate security, private local ground transportation for artist and travel party for the entire duration of stay”, as part of Chris Brown’s agreement stipulated.
That aside, all bookings must be made in “conjunction with and approval of the artist’s tour manager.” The approved 5-star hotel consists of one presidential suite for the artist, one junior suite for his management, and king singles for travel party. These are the kind of prohibitive requirements that make it almost impossible to book an international artist to perform in Africa.
Jay Z and Beyonce Fee
Beyonce’s performance at the Global Citizen Festival at FNB stadium in 2018 was exhilarating. Her booking fee was, however, not. According to rumor mills, the power couple pocketed R56 million ($3,959,060) excluding Jay Z’s performance fee.
Requirements
Beyonce’s dressing room should be kept at exactly 25.5 degrees Celsius with no rose scented candles. If her children are accompanying her on tour, a version of her twins 18 carat gold plated cots, complete with silk bedding and changing mates, be included, and that the children be accompanied by four nannies. Jay Z on the hand hands requires that his dressing room be kept at 22 degrees Celsius and for it to contain chilled bottles of his Ace of Spades Champagne.
