Peter Kimani: The Tycoon Who Owns Lake Naivasha Sawela Lodge

Peter Kimani is a Kenyan businessman with major interests in the country’s hospitality industry. He is the chairman of the ‘Naivasha Green Love Festival’ and proprietor of Lake Naivasha Sawela Lodge in Nakuru County.

The Penn State University graduate owns Sawela Lodges through his company, Shades of Africa Inc which he founded in January 1999 and has served as it’s director to date.

Sawela Lodge is located off Moi South Lake Road on the southern shores of Lake Naivasha. The establishment is surrounded by beautiful yellow and green acacia trees making it a serene environment for relaxation. It’s also completely modern, with contemporary facilities. Sawela has ultra-contemporary facilities complement unique African architecture and design.

The Lodge offers stunning views of both Lake Naivasha and Mount Longonot. It’s only about an hour’s drive from Nairobi City. It’s proximity makes it accessible to National Parks and Game Reserves in the region.

Sawela means “comfort in a bird’s nest,” a name that perfectly fits the luxurious facilities available at the lodge. This Lodge boasts 18 deluxe rooms and 24 superior rooms with a client’s choice of single or double beds. Each of the rooms features hand-knit mats, stunning African art, and 24/7 free Wi-Fi.

Each room also has large window lounges that let in fresh breeze off the lake and let plenty of natural light into the room.

Sawela Lodge also offers a number of activities within the facility including; contact sports, guided nature walks, and swimming.

The Lodge offers laundry services, babysitting and a safety deposit box for clients’ valuables. Sawela is great destination for weddings or conferences among other activities.

During an interview with Business Daily, Kimani noted that the area boasts a rich heritage that is yet to be sold to tourists.

“Naivasha is a place of transition, a staging area for safaris, is key to the Trans-Africa Highway and nearly one in four of the world’s cut flowers come from this region,” he said.

Kimani also noted that the region has played a key role in regional peace initiatives that established agreements such as the Comprehensive Peace Agreement ending the Second Sudanese Civil War, and the Kenyan Constitutional talks resulting in the Naivasha Accord.

“Naivasha Love Festival will be a three-day event: Green Love, a sustainability conference on February 13; Red Love: Love in Paradise on February 14 and Love for Culture and Art on February 15,” he said.

The Green Love Festival includes a morning hike to Mt Longonot, a walk in Eburu Forest, a cycling race from Hells Gate, a boating competition at the lake and evening entertainment by the Koroga Festival. The event targets between 15,000 to 20,000 people.
