Finland Universities That Partnered With Uasin Gishu County In Student Scholarship Program

In May 2021, under the leadership of Jackson Madago, Uasin Gishu County Government partnered with universities in Finland in a programme that saw students airlifted to live, study and work in the foreign country.

Barely a year later, a section of students in Finland face deportation after the county failed to remit school fees although they had paid the requisite funds.

A section of officials who were in charge of the programme are currently being investigated by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC).

In this article, WoK looks at the universities where the students are studying under the purported scholarship programme.

University of Helsinki

With a community of over community of 40,000 students and employees, the University of Helsinki is Finland’s largest and oldest academic institution.

Teaching in the university by law is provided both in Finnish and Swedish, while teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate and doctoral levels.

They have three branches spread across Finland namely City Center, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viiki campuses.

The university offers range of study programmes including Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, PhD courses and study programmes.

Tampere University

Tampere University was founded in January 2019 following a merger between the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology.

The University of Tampere was founded in 1925 as the Civic College in Helsinki teaching public administration, organisation management and journalism.

By 1960, the number of students had increased to 933 and the School of Social Sciences moved to Tampere. The institution was renamed to the University of Tampere in 1966.

Tampere University offers among other programs Bachelor’s Degree programmes, Master’s programmes and Doctoral programmes.

Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences

Established in 1994, JAMK or Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences offers Bachelor’s Degree programmes and Master’s programmes.

There are three Bachelor’s degree programmes and two Master’s degree programmes at JAMK which are conducted in English.

The institution has over 8,500 students and 900 employees.

Laurea University of Applied Sciences

Established in 1992, Laurea University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences that operates in Uusimaa, southern Finland.

The institution has approximately 7,800 students and 600 employees.

The university has six campuses are located in Helsinki, Hyvinkää, Espoo , Lohja, Porvoo and Vantaa.

Laurea offers Bachelor’s degree programmes as well as Master’s degree programmes in English and Finnish.
