Vivian Wambui’s career journey began in 2012 at Strathmore University Business School (SBS) as a housekeeper, driven by the need to earn a living.

Despite facing tough obstacles due to her background, she never lost sight of her dreams.

Here is her story as told by WoK.

The Early Obstacles

After her secondary education, Wambui started work at Strathmore University as a housekeeper, driven by the need to earn a living.

Her socio-economic background presented hurdles that tested her resolve to pursue higher education.

Every graduation season, tears would trickle down her cheeks as she wondered if she would ever be the one donning a graduation gown.

Yet, Vivian’s indomitable spirit propelled her forward, relentlessly clinging to the flickering hope of a brighter future.

During her tenure as a staff member, Vivian’s latent potential caught the discerning eye of an individual who recognized the yearning within her, a yearning to banish darkness and inspire others.

“I received ideas and inspiration from various individuals. For instance, I recall feeling a bit unwell one workday and decided to visit the University’s medical center.

To my surprise, Dr. Evans Almeida not only tended to my physical health but also kindled my dreams and aspirations. He inquired about my ambitions and subsequently connected me with a mentor who provided guidance and uplifted my spirits,” Vivian recalls as quoted by the University’s website.

Under his guidance, Vivian was connected with a mentor who served as a beacon of light, offering invaluable guidance and uplifting her spirit in immeasurable ways.

The unexpected turn

Though Vivian initially yearned for a career in law, her journey took an unexpected turn when she discovered a passion for accounting.

Numbers captivated her, telling stories without the need for words.

This newfound love for accounting surpassed her expectations and opened doors to pursue her dreams.

She started her accounting journey by gaining a certificate in Accounting Technician (ATC) at Nairobi College, which later evolved into a diploma (ATD) after a syllabus review by KASNEB.

Undeterred by the burdens of work, CPA studies, and Bachelor of Commerce (BCOM) classes at Strathmore University, Vivian adroitly danced through the intricate choreography of her responsibilities.

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic introduced an additional layer of complexity as online learning became the norm.

Amidst the chaos, Vivian remained unwavering in her pursuit of excellence, braving the stressful overlaps between her various obligations.

 Transitioning Careers

Vivian’s financial constraints were an ongoing challenge, but with the help of Ms. Christine Oketch, she secured a scholarship at Strathmore University.

This opened doors for her to transition from her housekeeping job to the financial sector, where she could explore her newfound passion.

With the support of the university staff and her unwavering determination, Vivian continued her CPA studies while embarking on her BCOM degree, solidifying her commitment to personal and professional growth.
