Alliance Girls High School was founded by the Alliance of Protestant Mission. Initially called African Girls High School, the institution has produced some of Kenya’s top cream in medicine, law, politics, and entrepreneurship.
The school was instrumental in shaping the destiny of dozens of prominent Kenyan women, such the late Mama Lucy Kibaki (Kenya’s former first lady), Hon. Charity Ngilu (a trailblazer in the political field), Hon. Nyiva Mwendwa (Kenya’s first female cabinet minister), and Prof. Olive Mugenda (first female Vice Chancellor of a Public University).

Effie Owuor
Effie Owuor joined Alliance High School after completing her O levels at Butere Girls. She went on to become the first Kenyan female state counsel, first woman to be appointed high court judge, and first female magistrate. Effie retired from court in 2008.
Dr. Betty Gikonyo
The founder of Karen Hospital is another proud alumni of Alliance High School. Dr. Betty became the first female paediatric cardiologist in the country.
She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and a Masters in pediatric cardiology from the University of Nairobi. The renown doctor also has a post doctoral fellowship in paediatric cardiology from University of Minnesota.
Elizabeth Masiga
Elizabeth Masiga attended Butere Girls followed by Alliance Girls High School. She then joined the University of Nairobi to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English, Geography and Economics.
After graduating from the University of Nairobi, she was employed by the Ministry of Education at the department of examinations administrations.
Wanting to be a teacher, she did a postgraduate in education and worked at Mary Leakey Girls, Agha Khan Secondary School and Alliance Girls High School. Later, she went on to become the first woman to serve as chief inspector of schools.
Dr. Sally Kosgey
A seasoned politician, the Alliance Girls High School alumna obtained a BA from Dar es Salaam University. She once served as the minister of higher education in the coalition government.
Dr. Mary Okelo
The founder of Makini School is a woman of many firsts. She became the country’s first woman bank manager, abd first woman advisor to the president of the African Development Bank.
The former banker founded and served as the first chairperson of Kenya Women Financial Trust. She was the first Women’s World Banking African Regional Representative.
In 2017, she was recognised as one of Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government and Titans: Building Nations Awards – Lifetime Achievers Award East Africa Region.
