Hellen Muthoni, popularly referred to as Msoo, is a TV presenter and gospel singer. She gained popularity for hosting the Inooro show Rurumeke every Sunday.

Many described her presence on the show as inspirational and touching. This is what led her to win the hearts and minds of many listeners from the Mt Kenya region.

Here is her story as told by WoK.

Background and the struggle of losing her father

The presenter was born in 1989 in a family of four children. In a past interview, she revealed that they lived a life of luxury.

They lived in Matimbei village in Kiambu county. Life drastically changed after her father passed away in the August  1998 bomb blast.

“My father was very rich and well known in our village that even teachers feared us. We used to go [to school] in home clothes and no teacher would complain,” she said in an interview with Kikuyu Diaspora TV.

Things changed and they were chased from their home forcing them to relocate to their grandmother’s place. The house was not cemented and in poor condition compared to what they were used to.

Their mother also fell into depression since she felt betrayed. Their grandmother, who traveled a lot, took the responsibility of caring for them. Before she could even learn to wash herself properly, she started taking care of her younger brother.

Life in school was also hard as those who knew them previously mocked their change in fortune.

She attended Matimbei Primary school until Grade 5 and later went to study in Limuru. After completing class eight, her brother-in-law who was a doctor helped pay for her school fees. She attended St. Luke’s High School.

Career

The media personality loved acting and sharpened her skills after high school. She worked with production companies, like Johari and Fanaka as a Kikuyu actor.

The scripts were given to her in English and she had to translate them to Kikuyu. Later, she got a job as a voiceover artist for Kameme FM before landing the role on Inooro TV.

She hosted the gospel show for about 7 years until on Sunday 12th September 2023, when she announced her departure from the station. Colleagues surprised her on her last show even as most wished her well.

Music

Muthoni said in the past that she wrote her first song while washing dishes at her sister’s house.

She has credited Paul Mwai and James Wanyoike for being her mentors in her music journey.

Her song Ndimugure, meaning I am redeemed, was a collaboration with Mercy Masika.
