Ajib Gathoni is an award winning Kenyan content creator with over 1.2 million followers on Tik Tok. Thanks to her dance moves and enchanting charisma, she has won an enviable fan base. This has led to a number of brands to partner with her to amplify their products.
Here is her story as told by WoK.
Background and Education
She was born and raised in Mombasa. She completed high school in 2017 and they moved to Nairobi in 2019.
At the time, her mother was sick and they were organizing a way for her to travel to India for treatment.
When her mum returned, she decided Nairobi was going to be her fresh start and thus began their journey in the capital city.
Career
Before moving to Nairobi, she was part of a dance crew in Mombasa called Exodus Hype Movers. Later, when COVID-19 hit, there was nothing to do and she was bored. Hence, she discovered Tik Tok and began to post dance videos.
At first, she would post videos of herself whining to various songs. While others considered it a provocative dance, for her it was just art. One of her fans was her mother who enjoyed what she was doing. Her videos were well received and she quickly gained popularity.
Initially, she did it for fun until she realized that there was money to be made. She was paid Ksh6,000 by her first brand. It made her so happy to realize a brand would pay her for doing what she loves.
Being business savvy, she also started a clothing business with her then boyfriend Josh. They named their brand random wear.
The idea came when they wore something and a fan asked how they could get the same. Hence, they found a perfect name and began the business.
She immersed herself into it and learnt everything there was to know including stitching and types of materials. Later after the break up with her boyfriend, she revealed that random wear was defunct.
Today, she continues to make videos and is loved by many. In a recent interview with KTN, she said not everyone makes it in content creation.
However, those who make it should strive to produce unique content and be consistent so that fans would keep coming for more. If it is just the same thing everyday, people will get tired and move on.
Awards
In 2020, she received the Tik Tok dancer of the year award.
In 2021, she won Pulse’s Tik Tok and Dancer of the Year awards.
In 2022, Ajib Gathoni won dancer of the year and in 2023, she was nominated for the pulse award. Although she did not win, she was among the top three.
Relationship
The content creator was in a relationship with Josh Wonder. The two met and began doing content on Tik Tok and took fans through their romantic journey. Their break up became apparent in March 2023 and she confirmed they were indeed separated.
