Bundi Karau: Top 2002 KCSE Candidate With 4 Degrees, Phd and Thriving Career in Medicine

Bundi Karau was one of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates who successfully attained the highest rank in the national examinations for form four in 2002.

He achieved commendable scores that enabled him to pursue a career in medicine.

In a previous interview, Karau disclosed that his performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) was not as strong, which resulted in his admission to a secondary school that was not among the most prestigious.

He attended Kanyakine Boys’ High School in North Imenti, where he distinguished himself through his outstanding academic achievements.

“While in school I knew my competition was in Starehe and other top schools. I was working hard to qualify for a degree in medicine,” he stated.

Owing to his exceptional performance, Karau was admitted to the University of Nairobi to undertake a Bachelor of Science degree from 2004 to 2010.

Subsequently, he pursued a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine at the same institution.

Karau completed his studies in 2017.

His pursuit of academic excellence continued beyond his master’s degree as he enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy program in Human Anatomy in 2020, culminating in his graduation in September 2023.

“This journey seemed insurmountable 3 years ago when I set out. It almost seemed dumbfounding that I would do this. But there’s nothing determination and focus can’t achieve. It pays to start and keep moving in small steps,” he said.

As he deepened his understanding in the academic environment, Karau simultaneously assumed various roles in the practical field to enhance his experience.

He served as a medical doctor with the Ministry of Medical Services from 2011 to 2023 and held the position of senior house officer at the University of Nairobi from 2014 to 2023.

Beginning in 2018, Karau took on the roles of senior lecturer and honorary Consultant Physician at Kenya Methodist University and Meru Teaching and Referral Hospitals, respectively.

Additionally, he is the Chief Physician at Oregon Health Services in Meru.
