Cyrus Maina is a former footballer who has played for Ulinzi Stars where he also served as a coach years later.

Other than his career in the sporting world, he is also  into dog breeding having worked as a dog breeder for nearly five decades.

Main also worked as a trader at Gikomba Market.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

Cyrus Maina from Kiambu County has been breeding dogs since 1976.

According to a report on Kenyans, he developed an interest in dogs at a young age while in Nyahururu, Laikipia County.

Maina committed himself to breeding dogs after interacting with a local Catholic priest who gifted him a German Shepherd puppy.

He currently sells dogs for about Ksh 15,000.

Maina sells the puppies to families and tea farms; he also rents dogs to different security firms. At the moment, he keeps some 42 mature dogs.

He has also provided employment having hired two workers who tend on the dogs on permanent basis.

“The workers are trained on first aid so that they attend to emergencies in case they arise,” Maina said in a past interview.

Maina feeds them meat, eggs, cooked rice, and other foods with different nutrients.

“I feed the mature dogs once a day, especially at night. For the puppies, I feed them twice and every meal must contain milk,” he stated.

Maina also noted that he went big on hygene ehich he says its a key aspect of dog breeding.

“I use kennels that are 5ft by 5ft and each hosts three mature dogs. The houses are made of strong wire mesh at the front, metal on the sides and the floor has timber

“They are raised about a metre from the ground and underneath is concrete for ease of cleaning and good hygiene,” he said.
