Elias Makori: The Career Journey Of Kenya’s Top Journalist, Education, Career, Awards & Marriage

Elias Makori was the Managing Editor, Sports at Nation Media Group (NMG). He boasts over 25 years of experience in sports journalism.

The award-winning journalist is a veteran in his field, and holds a Masters Degree in Sports Management from the Johan Cruyff Institute of Sports Studies, Barcelona, Spain.

Education

According to his LinkedIn bio, Makori attended St. Augustine University in Tanzania between 1991 and 1992.

He graduated  with a Diploma in Journalism and mass Communication.

Between 2015 and 2016, he attained a Masters in Sports Management from the Johan Cruyff Institute, Barcelona, Spain.

Career

Makori joined Standard Group as a sports correspondent in 1992. He worked at the media house for a year until his departure in January 1993.

He moved on to Nation Media Group in 1999 and worked for 5 years as a deputy sports editor until April 2004.

His mandate was to assist the sports editor in providing content for the sports pages on Daily Nation, Saturday Nation and Sunday Nation. He also managed sports sub editors, reporters and correspondents.

He served at NMG as a sports editor between 2004 and 2013, all while retaining his prior mandate.

For one year between 2013 and 2014, Makori was a managing sports editor, producing a unique sports newspaper on a twice-weekly basis.

In 2014, he was appointed the Regional Editor-North Rift for NMG. He was tasked with handling editorial operations in and creating good business relationships with 8 County Governments namely Baringo, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Turkana, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma and Elgeyo Marakwet.

In 2016, Makori was named managing sports editor, managing cross-group print, digital and broadcast sports news.

International roles
Between April 2008 and April 2016, Makori was a Press Commissioner Member at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
He was tasked with overseeing improvement of athletics journalists facilities and services at major competitions.
He also championed for the advancement of professionalism in athletics journalism globally. Part of job was to also ensure African journalists’ interests are well taken care of by the IAAF and organisers of major championships.
He trained and mentored young, upcoming athletics journalists.
Since 2016, has been a member of the Press and Media Adviory Group at the IAAF.
Awards
In 2012, Makori was named the IAAF World Journalist of The Year.
Marriage
Makori tied the knot in 2013 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church Limuru. He is married to Christine Nduta.
