Arguably one of the best tourist destinations, Maasai Mara is home to some of the best safari camps in the continent. Nestled in this gorgeous Savannah is Emboo River, a luxury camp where eco-friendliness and luxury are intertwined to create an unforgettable experience for the guests. The lodge makes use of local resources and is the first of its kind in the area. It is also the first camp to use electric powered vehicles thus cutting down carbon emissions.
Water
Water is recycled using natural means and the swimming pool treated the same way. Wastewater is treated using local plants then transferred to tanks for use in the workshop and toilets. This in turn reduces consumption of water by 90% and ensures all the water is re-used.
Tents
The camp features six rooms with the tents having floor to ceiling views. From the comfort of their abode, guests can watch hippos drink water or zebras grazing around. The tents come with a rain shower that offers guests beautiful views of the surrounding as they take their shower. Timeless furniture made by locals and beautiful fabrics also adorn the rooms.
Power
The camp is powered by Solar energy. The solar energy is not only used for lighting and heating water but also for charging their electric safari vehicles.
Fresh farm produce
While the lodge has a garden for herbs and a few ingredients, they buy other products outside thus creating a system that is sustainable. Their meals are vegan friendly and the chefs limit the amount of meat cooked.
The little meat they cook is gotten from The Local Grill Restaurant in Nairobi which gets its meat from sustainable producers. Dairy and whatever they lack are bought from reputable local producers.
More eco- friendly efforts
The biogas powered kitchen and fire lit from paper and sawdust are another way the camp is eco-friendly. They also get their bathroom and cleaning products from Cinnabar Green and Grounded. Both of these local companies produce products that are free of chemicals and come in reusable packaging.
Giving back
The local community has been involved in the creating and sustaining of Emboo’s eco-friendly efforts. They employ people from the community and also have the locals from the Maasai village perform for tourists. Proceeds from tourist visits also go towards paying of fees in the village.
Emboo also establishes green schools where people get to learn about the environment. Their guests are invited for an eco tour and also encouraged to plant at least two trees to help with the carbon emissions.
Price
The tasty meals, noise-free eco-friendly vehicles, and uniquely crafted cocktails come at a price. Two adults visiting the camp for two nights pay Sh520,000. Those traveling with a child pay an extra Sh130,000 for the child.
