Eunice Jepkirui: How Single Mum From Nakuru Started A Thriving Chicken Business After Losing Her Job

In the face of adversity, some individuals find the strength to turn their setbacks into opportunities for success. Eunice Jepkirui, a determined single mother from Nakuru, Kenya, is a shining example of resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. After losing her job, she embarked on a poultry farming venture that has flourished into a thriving chicken business.

WoK delves into Eunice’s inspiring journey and discover how she transformed her circumstances through determination and hard work.

The Birth And Growth of a Business

Following the unfortunate loss of her job, Eunice felt the need to create a sustainable income source for herself and her family. With a passion for farming and an opportunity to capitalize on her knowledge of poultry, she decided to start her own chicken business. This marked the beginning of a remarkable entrepreneurial journey.

The single mum was been able to grow from 200 chicken to 400 chicken and aims to get to 600 chicken.

“I did not know I was supposed to hang my feeders to curb spillage that led to wastage. It used to cost me a lot because food is expensive, and whenever there is spillage and wastage, it affects my budget,” she told AIM.

Learning and Growth

Eunice quickly realized that success in poultry farming required more than just passion. Determined to learn and improve, she diligently sought out knowledge and implemented various strategies to refine her farming practices.

Through trial and error, she learned valuable lessons that helped her curb wastage and optimize her farming operations.

Minimizing Feed Wastage

One important lesson Eunice learned was the significance of minimizing feed wastage. Previously, she had unknowingly incurred losses due to spillage and improper feeder placement.

By hanging the feeders and raising the drinkers to the level of the chickens, she significantly reduced wastage, thereby maximizing her budget and increasing profitability.

Strategic Sales and Storage

Another key aspect of Eunice’s success lies in her strategic approach to sales. Recognizing market demand fluctuations, she slaughters her chickens when they have reached the desired weight and stores the meat in freezers. According to an interview video seen by WoK, Eunice thanks AIM Agriculture for gifting her the freezers.

This allows her to sell the chickens at opportune times when prices are more favorable, ensuring optimal profits from her hard work.

Health and Disease Prevention

Maintaining the health of her flock is crucial to her thriving business. Through continuous learning and research, she developed a vaccination schedule to protect her chickens from diseases.

By vaccinating the chicks against Newcastle disease and preventing the spread of infections, she safeguards the well-being of her brood and avoids potential losses.

Expanding the Business

The poultry farmer unwavering determination and commitment to excellence have fuelled her ambition to expand her chicken business further. With each success, she gains the confidence and experience needed to grow her enterprise.

Through continuous improvement, she aspires to increase her brood size and production capacity, ensuring sustainable growth and increased financial independence.
