Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has made headlines for years, culminated by his sentencing on Thursday, February 13 after being found guilty of corruption-related charges.

His 12-year prison sentence has once again brought his family into the spotlight. While Waititu’s political career has been marred by corruption allegations, his children have also been linked to wealth and scandal.

Waititu and his wife, Susan Wangari Ndung’u, have been married for over 25 years and have three children: Monica, Josephine, and Brian. Two of them have made headlines for different reasons, one linked to a fraud scandal and the other for their reckless behaviour.

Dr. Monica Ndung’u

Dr. Monica Ndung’u, a medical doctor, is the firstborn daughter, and she made news both for her engagement and her legal troubles. Her lavish wedding to Dr. Nyotu Gitau was a spectacle, an invite-only event graced by notable figures including Mama Ngina Kenyatta and President William Ruto during his stint as deputy president.

An alumnus of Alliance Girls High School, Njeri graduated with a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi in 2014. She previously worked at Kenyatta National Hospital before she switched in December 2017 when she was employed by the Kiambu County government and deployed to Gatundu Level 5 Hospital as a senior doctor.

In 2019, Monica was arrested alongside her father, accused of benefiting from questionable financial dealings. One of her bank accounts allegedly held KSh 108 million, a claim her father denied. Monica also owned Modiba Management Services Ltd, a company that won a KSh 874,000 tender from Kiambu County just weeks after being registered.

These deals placed her at the center of corruption allegations, with over KSh 18.8 million reportedly wired to accounts owned by hers and her mother’s bank accounts

Brian Ndung’u

While his sister was linked to wealth and business, Brian Ndung’u took a different path—becoming an online sensation. Described as a “spoilt brat”, Brian gained attention for his controversial arrest and irresponsible conduct.

Bearing a striking resemblance to his father, Brian made headlines after he was arrested for drunk driving and was sentenced to three months in jail with an alternative of a Kshs 30,000 fine.

Despite being an alumnus of Mang’u High School and Strathmore University, Brian’s public behavior overshadowed his academic achievements. He was likened to his father, especially due to his careless actions.
