Hussein Mohamed is a former Citizen TV prime time news anchor and communications expert, widely recognized for his distinguished career as a journalist and his current role as the State House Spokesperson for President William Ruto.

With a passion for journalism and a knack for diplomatic communication, Hussein has made a name for himself as a trusted voice in Kenya’s media landscape and political sphere.

Education

Hussein’s studied at Kanyakine High School in Meru County.

During his time there, he served as the Chairman of the Journalism Club, which ignited his interest in journalism and storytelling.

He later pursued his passion by enrolling at Zetech College, where he studied Photography and partially Journalism.

In 2019, he graduated with a Masters in Diplomacy and International Studies from University of Nairobi.

Career

After completing his studies, Hussein Mohamed eagerly sought opportunities in journalism. While waiting for job prospects, he explored his passion for photography, covering events such as weddings, burials, and college functions with a DSLR camera.

In a stroke of luck, he landed an interview with Kenya Television Network (KTN), marking the beginning of his illustrious media career.

In 2008, Hussein joined Citizen TV, one of Kenya’s leading television stations, as a news anchor and show host.

Throughout his decade-long tenure at the network, he demonstrated exceptional journalistic skills and versatility, earning accolades for his news presentation and insightful interviews.

Notable moments in his career include interviewing prominent figures like President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Hussein hosted several influential news shows at Citizen TV, including Newsnight and The Big Question alongside former anchor Janet Mbugua.

His ability to tackle diverse topics with poise and professionalism endeared him to audiences across the country, cementing his reputation as one of Kenya’s leading news anchors.

In 2019, Hussein made a significant career move when he bid farewell to Royal Media Services.

Surprisingly, Hussein’s journey took an unexpected turn when President William Ruto appointed him as the head of communications for his 2022 presidential campaign.

With Ruto’s victory in the 2022 Presidential elections, Hussein Mohamed was assigned his own office at State House, delinking the Office of State House Spokesperson from the Presidential Communication Service.

As State House Spokesperson, his primary mandate is to release statements on State House functions and projects, while also coordinating digital messaging, conducting branding research, and managing the press for the presidency.

Awards

Hussein Mohamed’s contributions to the media industry earned him recognition and accolades.

In 2018, he was honored with the male media personality of the year award at the Somali Glamor Awards, celebrating his outstanding work and impact in journalism.

Furthermore, in 2019, Hussein was awarded the Moran of the Burning Spear, a prestigious honor bestowed upon him by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Marriage

In December 2014, Hussein Mohamed tied the knot with his fiancée Malyun in a traditional Islamic ceremony called Nikkah at Masjid Nur in South C.

Despite his public presence as a news anchor and later as State House Spokesperson, Hussein has chosen to keep his family life private, seldom appearing in the media alongside his wife.
