In recent years, Kenya has emerged as a vibrant hub for technology and innovation in Africa, and the arrival of Starlink has further fueled this growth.

Launched by SpaceX, Starlink offers satellite-based internet access that promises high-speed connectivity even in the most remote areas of the country.

As the demand for internet access continues to surge, Starlink has quickly gained traction among businesses, educational institutions, and individuals alike.

However, despite its growing popularity, Starlink is not without its limitations.

In this article, WoK looks at the aspects of the service that users should be aware of before making the switch.

Copyright infringement

Starlink prohibits downloading copyrighted materials, such as movies and games, due to compliance with copyright laws and its own usage policy.

When users engage in illegal downloading, particularly through torrent trackers, Starlink may issue warnings and ultimately terminate accounts for repeat offenders.

Starlink’s system detects potential violations through tracking mechanisms employed by copyright holders, who can identify users based on their IP addresses when they download or share copyrighted content.

Acceptable Use Policy

The Starlink Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) outlines the permissible use of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service and related equipment.

Effective since July 1, 2020, the AUP is integral to the service agreement between users and SpaceX, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations governing internet usage.

By using Starlink services, users agree to adhere to the AUP.

The policy specifies a range of prohibited activities that, if violated, may lead to service suspension or termination.

Fair Use Policy

Starlink’s Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure that all users have equitable access to high-speed internet by managing network traffic and data allocation based on service plans.

This policy aims to prevent a small number of users from consuming excessive amounts of data, which could negatively impact the overall customer experience.

A significant feature of the Fair Use Policy is the introduction of a 1TB data cap for users on Priority plans, which includes Business and Mobile Priority subscribers.

However, this cap does not apply to Residential (Standard) plan users, who enjoy unlimited data.

Once Priority plan users exceed the 1TB threshold, their speeds are reduced to Standard levels, which may affect high-bandwidth activities such as streaming or gaming.

Disruptions during rainy and windy weather

Starlink, a satellite internet service, is generally designed to perform well in adverse weather conditions, but certain factors can disrupt its connectivity during rain and windy weather.

While light rain typically has minimal impact, heavy rain can significantly weaken the signal, leading to reduced speeds or temporary outages.

Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites help mitigate this issue somewhat, as they are closer to the ground compared to traditional satellites, reducing potential interference.

Wind can affect Starlink performance primarily if the dish is not securely mounted. If the dish shifts due to strong winds, it may disrupt the signal.

However, Starlink dishes utilize a phased array antenna design that allows them to track satellites without physical movement.
