Judy Nyawira, a woman of tenacity and unyielding spirit, is one such person. Her journey from a serene village in Kenya to the bustling world of film and television is a testament to the power of resilience.

WoK dives into the life of Judy Nyawira, exploring the trials she faced, the triumphs she celebrated, and the enduring lessons we can learn from her unwavering determination.

Age

She will be turning 36 years old this year (2023).

Humble Start

Her story began in the picturesque village of Kibirigwi, in Kirinyaga county where life flowed like the nearby river, steady and serene. Raised by hardworking parents, she understood the value of perseverance from an early age.

Education

Fuelled by an insatiable hunger for knowledge, Judy pursued education diligently. Despite facing financial constraints, she remained undeterred, driven by the desire to make her mother proud.

Excelling in her studies, she secured admission to the prestigious Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC). There, she delved into her passion for Film and TV Production, laying the cornerstone for her future success.

Motherhood

Challenges often present themselves when we least expect them. During her college years, Judy’s life took an unexpected turn when she learned about her pregnancy. She was 22 years at time.

Speaking to SPM Buzz, Judy recalled the pain she underwent upon learning she was pregnant.

“I was with Abel so I went and showed him the test results. That day I cried the whole day and 12 years later, we are here.”

Undeterred, she embraced motherhood while staying true to her educational aspirations. Balancing coursework and caring for her daughter, Mumbua, Judy emerged triumphant, proving that motherhood and personal growth could walk hand in hand.

The 35 year old stated that she is not planning to have more children.

“We closed that chapter, we are OK with just one child,” she said.

“Please those stupid questions that you people keep asking in the DM, eti ongeza mwingine, please those are stupid questions,” She added.

Marriage to Abel Mutua

Before she met and fell for Abel, Judy was dating a much older guy. He was 28 while she was only 19. The relationship did not work out.

“I later came to realise that the reason we didn’t work could have been because of our age difference, he was 28, I was only 19,” she revealed.

The revered director pursued her while they were still in college. At the time she was still seeing the 28 year old man but their relationship was on shaky ground.

Judy was slowly enjoying the embrace of her husband to be:

“Abel and I started spending a lot of time together and a girl who knew my ex-boyfriend would tell him that there was a man I was hanging around a lot in school,” Judy said.

He finally called it off with his ex-boyfriend for Abel. She came to learn later that she was pregnant,

“We carried out four pregnancy tests to be certain of the outcome. I cried the entire day and just like that at the age of 22 and Abel at 23, we realised that we would be parents,” she said.

“I did not go home for six months. My mum was working at a casual job then and I did not know how she would take it.”

To show his commitment, Abel visited her home formally and even went ahead to pay her final year college fees.

Their daughter is now 12 years old.
