Former vice president and NASA co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka begged for a job and President Uhuru Kenyatta obliged by appointing him as the head of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) on peace in South Sudan.
To jog your memory down memory lane, Kalonzo had vowed never to work with Uhuru’s Jubilee administration. The Wiper leader said at the time he would rather be a sweeper than take any position in the ruling party. But politicians are masters in flipping. Kalonzo was literally begging Uhuru for a job during his father’s funeral. And he was ready to take any job; including being the President’s errand boy.
In the spirit of the ‘handshake’ between Uhuru and Raila, the Head of State appointed his political foe turned allay to as a peace envoy in the tumultuous South Sudan. The position was held by former Bostwana President Festus Mogae, who has since stepped down.
JMEC is an appendage of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) that oversaw the peace process in South Sudan since 2013. And Kalonzo hit the ground almost immediately even before his name was forwarded to (Igad).
He jetted to Juba on his first assignment, just hinting on how desperate he was for a job. And his assignment-like the errand boy he wanted to be-was to deliver a congratulatory message to President Salva Kiir from Uhuru for implementing the South Sudan peace agreement with rebel leader Riek Machar.
Task ahead of Kalonzo
The former vice president will mediate other conflicts areas away from South Sudan. According to insiders, his role is not well defined but will take shape with time.
