KPLC Issues Guidelines for New Power Connections: Requirements for Businesses and Homeowners Detailed

Kenya has made remarkable progress in electrification over the past decade, with over 75 per cent national electricity access. This has been driven by government efforts such as the Last Mile Connectivity Project and the adoption of renewable energy projects.

Despite this progress, significant challenges remain, particularly in remote regions, where unreliable supply and high connection costs hinder full electrification.

Many homeowners and commercial entities often fall victim to fraudsters who claim to assist with electricity connections. This is largely due to a lack of understanding of the legal process, often resulting in financial losses from penalties for illegal connections or failed electrification attempts.

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has revealed the process of applying for a new electricity connection, which is simple enough to ensure you avoid being duped by scammers.

Before beginning the application process, there are various requirements needed that are necessary to support the smooth and efficient installation of the connection.

For homeowners, they must have:

1. A copy of National Identification or Passport for non-Kenyans

2. A copy of KRA Pin certificate

3. A route sketch leading to premises where supply is required.

4. A copy of the title deed and land search documents for ownership of property

5. A Supply contract form, which is duly signe

6. Wiring certificates of the structure

7. Consent from the owner of the property where necessary

For commercial entities, they are required to produce:

1. A copy of the certificate of registration.

2. A route sketch leading to premises where supply is required.

3. A Copy of the KRA PIN certificate

4. A scaled site plan for Industries, housing estates and shopping malls, among other structures

5. Consent from the owner of the property where necessary

6. A Supply contract form, which is duly signed

7. Wiring certificates which are also signed

The Application Process 

1. Download the Kenya Power’s My Power app or log into the website selfservice.kplc.co.ke.

2. Choose the ‘New Supply Application’ button and fill in the details.

3. Submit the required documents

4. You will then receive an application reference number.

After processing the application, KPLC conducts an external site inspection to assess standards compliance and estimate the connection cost.

This process is done within 8days from the date of application.

Following the inspection, you will receive an installation quotation based on your inquiry’s specifications, valid for 90 days, along with the available payment channels.

After making the payment, present the payment receipt to KPLC offices to proceed with the connection process.

The company will then begin the required external works and install the meter. The full connection process is usually completed within 75 days from the payment date.
