Little Known Husbands Of Powerful Women Politicians In Kenya

By Isaac Blessings

The Kenyan political space is no longer a men’s only arena. Gone are the days when a few women-à la Charity Ngilu- ran for top seats in the country and gave a good account of themselves while at it. That said, most Kenyans have always wondered the type of men these female politicians are married to.

Worry no more because in this article, WoK takes a look at the little known husbands of powerful women politicians in Kenya.

Andrew Peter Ngirici

Andrew Ngirici is the husband of the current women representative and aspiring governor for Kirinyaga county, Purity Ngirici. His grass to grace story has been inspirational to many in the country. He dropped out of Kirigo Primary School while in class four, began doing menial jobs and later became a donkey cart driver for his neighbor. His breakthrough came when he met the late James Kanyotu who was then a chief-spy and later served as National Intelligence Service (NIS) boss. Andrew became his personal assistant and he took advantage of his networks and the little money he was making to invest in the transport sector. He later joined the real estate, media, mining and large scale farming sectors where he made his billions. The billionaire is the owner of the famous Mt Kenya TV and Iganjo FM.

Pius Ngugi

Billionaire Pius Ngugi is the husband to the current Women Representative of Nairobi County, Esther Passaris who is his second wife and they have two children together. The 78 year old is the owner of Kenya Nut Company – a company that produces macadamia nuts under the brand name ‘Out of Africa.’  The nuts, which are the most expensive nuts in the world, are exported to foreign markets especially in North America and Europe. The billionaire also owns Thika Coffee Mills, is a shareholder in the Tatu City project and has other interests in sweet manufacturing, dairy farming, winery and Amazon Motors.

Gathitu is a renowned businessman, farmer and the former Chairman of the Kenya Dairy Board. The two were first seen in public in 2013 after Sabina walked with Maina as her hubby to pick her election certificate from the Murang’a Returning o0fficer after she won the Women reap seat while aged 34 years.

William Kigen/Peter Waweru

Laikipia Women Representative is the second wife to renowned lawyer and Advocate of the High Court, William Kigen. Waruguru came clean to reveal that she is married to Kigen during an interview with KTN where she insisted that she is legally married and that the constitution recognizes their union. She further stated that she has no apologies for being a second wife and was proud and better off that her husband was the man she wanted to be with. She also denied allegations of being a ‘Mpango wa kando’ and claimed that the constitution allows a man to be polygamous. This relationship seemingly died given that businessman Peter Waweru-who is the current Kirinyaga County Chamber of Commerce chairman-came out to state that he had married the Laikipia woman rep.

Kamotho Waiganjo

Kamotho Waiganjo is the husband to the current Governor representing Kirinyaga County, Anne Mumbi Waiguru. I can’t leave him because of the great things he has done for me,” Gladys said as she introduced her husband during the rally.
