Mary Wanyonyi Chebukati, wife to former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is an accountant with decades of experience working in the public sector. She is a former Senior Deputy Accountant General in the Ministry of Lands and Physical planning.
Despite her decorated resume, Mary Chebukati has managed to stay away from the limelight, regardless of her husband’s national profile and stewardship of the historic August 9, 2022, General Elections.
On October 7, 2022, she was shortlisted among the 477 Kenyans eyeing the positions of Principal Secretaries in President William Ruto’s government.
Mary holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and a Masters in Business Administration. She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) and a certified mediator.
Over the course of her career, she has served as an accountant across various government offices. Mary Chebukati joined the lands docket in 2019 and is head of the accounting unit in the Ministry headed by outgoing Cabinet Secretary Faridah Karoney.
Before moving to the Ministry of Lands, she was the Director General in-charge of Accounting and Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Treasury. She was attached to the office of the Principal Secretary.
Mary Chebukati also served on various capacities across the country in the defunct districts. She also served at the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB) secretariat in the accountant general department.
Mrs Chebukati has also served in the boards of several public institutions including the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Maasai Mara University and the Co-operative University of Kenya.
Some of her listed hobbies include golf; she reportedly attends various tournaments of the sport held across the country.
Mary and Wafula have three children; Rachel, Jonathan and Emmanuel Chebukati.

Mary was sworn as the Chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) on July 17 (2023) by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
