Mike Njenga: Berated In Church For Wearing Open Shoes By Pastor, Now Owns Multi-Million Businesses

Mike Njenga is a Kenyan journalist who has worked for leading media houses in the country. His journey to becoming a well known face was not rosy. At one point, he was so broke to the point of humiliation.

In an interview, he once recalled how a pastor made hurting remarks about him because of his dire situation. So hurtful were the remarks that he has not forgotten that humiliation to date.

“Some years back, I was working at a certain church. I used to do sound for that particular church and sometimes would sleep at city hall on days we held conferences there. I was extremely broke. One Sunday, I went and borrowed open shoes from my cousin. I did not even have money to buy shoe polish. So, I used a sponge soaked in water to wipe the dust from the shoes,” he recounted.

The news anchor then went on to narrate how the pastor called him and other ministers and lashed out at them for not dressing properly while on the pulpit. He went on to state that some of them were wearing open shoes as if they were on the beach.

What hurt more was that he had borrowed the money to go to church that day and it was not his desire to dress badly, he just didn’t have the money.

The journalist has come a long way since then and many know him for his news presenting skills. His flow with words, demure and overall style has made him a darling of many Kenyans.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

After graduating with a Diploma in Journalism, he started his career at Eagles Creations where he was a production manager in both audio and video.

In June 2003, he joined TBN Family media as a radio presenter and got promoted to the post of Team Manager Radio (Head of Radio), a position he held until his exit.

While at Family, he hosted different shows including a youth show called Rock Solid and a breakfast show that opened his eyes to the political world. He also hosted different weekend shows: Top 20 countdown on Sunday morning and a reggae show (Real Vibes) and a Sunday afternoon show called Relax.

Later, he joined Royal Media services and worked for Citizen TV. At Citizen TV, he began by hosting his own live bulletin, Live at 4. He rose through the ranks and began hosting the 9:00pm news alongside legendary journalist Catherine Kasavuli before moving to host Business Center alongside Terryanne Chebet.

He left Citizen TV to join Inooro TV, where he works to date.

Michael is the second born in a family of 4 children. He lost his father in 2018 as evidenced by his post on social media at the time.

Property He Owns

Njenga is not one of those celebrities who are always on the edge of poverty attributable to lack of planning. According to an article appearing on Opera news, Mike Njenga has a number of business interests spread across the country.

He reportedly owns a hotel and restaurant in Nairobi where he doubles as the director. He has also diversified into dairy and pig farming in Kiambu. In addition to that, he owns a four storey building in Kenol that has been rented for business.
