Mohammed Wehliye: The Man From Wajir Keen On Becoming Gor Mahia Chairman

If you have a twitter account then you have most likely come across a user going by the name Mohammed Wehliye. The ardent supporter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Gor Mahia FC is vocal on matters politics, sports and the economy.

In this article, WoK brings you the story of one Mohammed Wehliye, MBS – the stalwart supporter of ‘Baba’. 

Mohammed Wehliye

Mohammed Wehliye was born in Wajir County in the North Eastern Region of Kenya where he spent the better part of his childhood and teenage life. He would then join Starehe Boys Centre in Nairobi before proceeding to the University of Nairobi where he graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree specializing in Management Sciences and Quantitative Methods. After his undergraduate, he joined the James Cook University, School of Business and graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) specializing in Finance. He also pursued a Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance and Investments, Capital Markets in 2003 at the Securities Institute in Australia.

Career

He began his career journey in October 2001 working at Bank of Tokyo – Mitsubishi UFJ as a Manager, Treasury Market and Operational Risk for 2 years and 11 months before moving to Saudi Arabia where he joined Riyad Bank as the Senior Vice President and Head of Financial Risk Management in charge of Market and Financial Market. Mohammed Wehliye worked in the position for 12 years from September 2004 to December 2016 when he finally joined the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) as a Central Banker. He currently works as a Senior Advisor for the Saudi Arabia Central Bank and a board Member for Starehe Boys Center, Nairobi.

Other Interests.

Apart from being good in the financial world, Wehliye has a keen interest in Kenyan politics. He is vocal on social media especially on twitter where he uses his account which has surpassed over 729,000 followers to air his opinions and thoughts. The SAMA Senior Advisor is a close ally of Azimio presidential flagbearer Raila Amolo Odinga and doesn’t shy away from publicly defending him. He was awarded the prestigious Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) award for his exceptional contributions in the Kenyan economy. Political analysts predict that he will be appointed the Treasury Cabinet Secretary if the Azimio la Umoja coalition wins the Presidential seat in the August 9th General elections.

Gor Mahia Chairman

Wehliye is also a lover of sports with his favourite teams being Chelsea Football Club and Gor Mahia FC. He has time and been expressed his interest in taking over from Ambrose Rachier as Gor Mahia FC Chairman stating that he has what it takes to transform the football club into Africa’s soccer powerhouse.

“Gor Mahia’s winning streak continues. Just like my dream to replace Mugabe (Rachier) is on course in sha Allah. If I am elected Gor Mahia Chairman, I will in sha Allah bring Jose Mourinho as manager. The only roadblock is MUGABE,” reads a tweet posted on April 19th 2021.
