Mugambi Nandi: From Chuka to Setting Up a Law Firm in London

Mugambi Nandi made history when his law firm, KN Law LLP became the first Nairobi-based law firm to set up a branch and relocate one of its partners to London, England.

The move was meant to coordinate KN Law’s growing corporate, M&A and PE client base while offering services to British firms seeking counsel on/in Nairobi.

Mugambi who prides himself on over 25 years’ experience in the legal field, was admitted to the role of a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales in September 2021.

“Some personal news: This boy from Chuka is now a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. Fact: It was not a life goal. I just woke up one day at the start of the lockdown last year and decided to make good use of all the time I suddenly had in my hands,” Mugambi wrote at the time, noting it was a dream come true.

In the 2021 Edition of Chambers Global Guide, Mugambi was ranked among one of three Kenyan Corporate experts based abroad alongside Clifford Chance LLP Partner, Jeniffer Mbaluto (based in London), and Atiq Ajarwalla (based in Dubai).

Background & Education

Mugambi Nandi holds Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Master of Business Adminstration (MBA) from the University of Nairobi (UoN). He holds a diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

He also holds a diploma in Financial Management and is a Certified Public Secretary and Certified Governance Auditor.

Mugambi Nandi has served as a Member of the Kenyatta University Council, Board Member of the Privatization Commission of Kenya, Communications Authority of Kenya, Seriani Asset Managers Limited, and Mayfair CIB Bank Limited.

Previously, he worked for the Standard Bank Group of South Africa as the Head of Legal/Company Secretary for the Kenyan operations, and the East African Development Bank as Legal Counsel.

His legal advisory work has earned him the acclaim of peers and clients, and recognition and consistent ranking by Chambers Global annually since 2017.

End-to-end, he has been involved in M&A, Private Equity, Capital Market, and Corporate Finance transactions with a combined value of more than Ksh100 billion.

Mugambi Nandi boasts vast experience in Capital Markets having acted as an advisor in numerous transactions including REITS, listings, privatizations, debt and capital raising, PE and VC transactions across Africa.

He was recognized by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) for his contribution to the implementation of the Kenya 10 Year Capital Markets Master Plan as a member of its Implementation Committee.

Mugambi has also served as Co-Chairperson of Working Group 3 which reviews and recommends legal and regulatory changes to deepen capital markets in Kenya.

The specialist law firm helps and works with corporate clients in M&A transactions, legal due diligence and advisory, corporate restructuring, capital markets, debt and equity transactions and complex real estate transactions in Kenya and across East and Central Africa.

Currently, the firm boasts a team of eight (8) lawyers including 3 partners, two associate partners and 3 associates.

Mugambi Nandi stated that his practice would also help Kenyans struggling to get legal representation abroad.

“If you are in London with a corporate, commercial or M&A need in Kenya, you would struggle to get the work done without going through one of the big law firms, most of which are now tied in exclusive arrangements with law firms in London or South Africa. By being present in London, I believe we can offer the same service but in a simpler, and direct way,” stated the Lawyer.

Mugambi Nandi was cited by Chambers Global in 2017 and 2018 as a “Recognised Practitioner” in the Corporate and Commercial Law rankings for Kenya.

He has been consistently ranked in Chambers Global in 2019, 2020, and 2021, with part of the citation stating that he is appreciated by clients for his “sharp legal mind” and “solutions-oriented approach”.
