From Hawking Onions to Pursuing His Passion

Born in Gathanji in Githunguri, Kiambu county, Phillip Kimani was the youngest of four siblings. Although academics didn’t come naturally to him, his innate talent for music became his true calling.

Even as he juggled his education, he dedicated a significant amount of time to honing his musical skills.

He recounts in several interviews seen by WoK of how as a young man he fell in love with a show on KBC by the late veteran presenter Eddie Fondo’s program ‘Wajue Wanamuziki’ and grew love for Lingala music

In addition to pursuing his passion, he also sold onions, tomatoes, and vegetables in the bustling market of Afraha Nakuru as he narrates in an interview with Kikuyu Diaspora TV.

Balancing Work and Music

While working as a Human Resource Officer at KARLO for over 15 years, he refused to let his passion for music fade away. Music was his constant companion as he navigated the demands of his employment.

Kimani has tirelessly pursued his musical aspirations, consistently honing his craft and sharing his gift with the world.

A Journey of Musical Exploration and Success

His musical journey led him to various parts of the country, including Nakuru, Naivasha, and Nairobi, where he gained invaluable experiences and connections.

In 1992, he released his first recording, an album titled “Yesu Ndiye Njia,” which served as a promising debut for his career.

On Being His Own Producer Without Any Formal Training

He assumed the role of a producer for his own music, demonstrating his versatility and unwavering dedication to his artistry.

In an interview with Jeff Kuria, the gospel artist revealed that he did not receive formal music education but possesses an innate talent and a deep understanding of the intricacies of the music production process.

His passion for a KBC program further contributed to his knowledge of music theory, which would prove instrumental as his music career soared to new heights.

Among his vast discography, two songs, “Abba” and “Gethsemane,” stand out as career-defining hits. The overwhelming success of “Abba” propelled him to leave his employment and fully commit to his music career.

His hit song ‘Amukira Igongona’ was as a result of a team he describes as a trying time in his life in matters faith and today is one of the most watched Kikuyu gospel songs on YouTube with over 10 million views.

Personal Life and Family

Outside of music, he cherishes quality time with his family and finds solace in farming. He currently resides in Ruiru with his wife and four children.

Phillip Kimani also doubles as an evangelist preaching the gospel in Kenya and evangelical work outside the boarders.

Passion, Mentorship, and Legacy

His decision to follow his passion has led to a fulfilling career that extends beyond his own success. Recognizing the importance of mentorship, he has established his own studio, where he nurtures and guides emerging musicians.
