A suspect in the murder of the Star newspaper journalist Erick Oloo has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Siaya High Court Judge Oseline Aburili has found Victor Ogola Luta guilty of murdering Oloo who was based in Siaya County.

In her ruling on Thursday, April 22, Lady Justice Aburili noted that all the evidence submitted pointed an accusing finger at Ogola, thus the decision to convict him.

Prior to the ruling, the suspect had appealed for leniency, but his application was rejected on grounds that no one can take a life then apologize for it.

Further, the judge noted that the accused is a habitual offender as he had been previously charged with causing disturbance.

The suspect has a right to appeal the ruling within the next 14 days.

Meanwhile, the court released his brother Franklin Luta who was also arrested in connection with the murder.

While releasing Luta, Justice Aburili noted that no sufficient evidence had been presented before her showing how he was involved in the murder.

Oloo was gruesomely murdered in November 2019.
