The Inspiring Journey Of Lisa Njenga – From UN Job To Beekeeper

Meet Lisa Khakayi Njenga, a 30-year-old dynamo on a mission to bring about positive change in the world. From her studies to her work in international organizations, and now as an entrepreneur.

Here is her story as told by WOK.

Early Challenges and Renewed Determination

Lisa’s journey began at the United States International University – Africa (USIU-Africa), where she embarked on her academic pursuits.

However, her journey faced a significant challenge during her second year when she became a parent. This life-changing event prompted her to take a break from her studies. But Lisa’s spirit remained unbroken.

In 2014, she returned to the academic arena, armed with a newfound determination to overcome obstacles and realize her dreams.

Lisa’s time at university was a turning point.

She founded the African Union Youth Club-USIU chapter, a platform that quickly attracted a vibrant community of nearly 100 young members.

“As I poured my heart and soul into leading the African Union Youth Club, our membership grew steadily, attracting nearly 100 members by the second semester,” She recalled.

Her degree in Psychology and a minor in Journalism equipped her with essential skills in communication and project management.

This laid the foundation for her passion for empowering young people, nurturing her ambition to uplift and support them.

Venturing Abroad and Making an Impact

Lisa’s journey took her across borders to Ethiopia, where she joined the United Nations (UN) Women as a program assistant.

Here, she engaged with the groundbreaking ‘African Girls Can Code (AGCCI)’ initiative, immersing herself in the world of international relations and diplomacy.

“Building upon the skills I acquired during my studies and the passion I developed for youth empowerment, I thrived in my role. Working alongside dedicated professionals in the field,” she remarks.

This experience broadened her horizons, providing insights that would prove invaluable in her future endeavors.

The culmination of Lisa’s hard work and dedication came when she secured a spot in the African Union Youth Volunteer (AUYV) program.

Chosen as one of just 100 youth ambassadors from across Africa, she underwent comprehensive leadership training.

This program offered her the opportunity to collaborate with various partner organizations within the African Union Commission, showcasing her diverse skill set and passion for change.

Turning Adversity into Opportunity

As the global pandemic reshaped the world, Lisa’s journey took an unexpected turn.

She returned to her homeland, Kenya, and adapted to remote work.

It was during this period that the spark of entrepreneurship ignited.

“My mum had kept a few bee hives for her own consumption and after some further research and brainstorming with my business partner, we got to learn that bee-keeping is one of the least labor-intensive yet highly lucrative agribusinesses.”

Inspired by her mother’s beekeeping efforts, Lisa co-founded ‘Oh honey!,’ an agribusiness that promotes sustainable apiculture practices.

“We also conduct training for young people and women on apiculture (beekeeping). My team and I have a vision to be a global brand.”

Lessons Learned and a Vision for Tomorrow

Lisa’s entrepreneurial journey was a source of profound lessons. She emphasized the importance of teamwork and  resilience.

“Throughout my journey, several key lessons have shaped my perspective when it comes to entrepreneurship. Teamwork makes the dream work: You cannot go very far alone.  Just start and keep pushing. Tune out the noise, seek mentorship, embrace financial literacy and practice delayed gratification!”

Looking ahead, Lisa’s vision extends beyond her business. She remains committed to initiatives focused on youth development, climate action, and the empowerment of women.

By equipping young individuals with the skills and confidence to voice their opinions effectively, she aims to amplify their presence in decision-making spheres.
