Top Private Hospitals in Kenya

Kenya has the best hospitals in East and Central Africa. These private hospitals offer quality but costly services, with the exception of mission hospitals that are affordable. The hospitals also accept insurance. 

Below is a list of a few popular private hospitals that offer quality services: 

The Nairobi West Hospital

The hospital was founded in the 1980s with the foundation of humanity first. The Nairobi West Hospital serves Kenyans as well as international patients. Their specialty includes: cancer care, orthopaedic, internal medicine, cardiology and urology. 

The Mediheal Group of Hospitals

This is one of the leading healthcare providers in East Africa. The hospital started more than a decade ago with just one hospital and has grown to a network of hospitals in Eldoret, Nairobi and Nakuru. 

Their wide range of ancillary services include:

  • A group of 10 tertiary centers (Nairobi, Eldoret, Nakuru and Kigali).
  • 400+ beds and 100+ dialysis beds.
  • Pediatric Endocrinology services.

The Nairobi Women’s Hospital 

Founded in 2001 by Dr. Thenya, the hospital has served hundreds of thousands of people. At first, the hospital specialized in obstetrics and gynecological services but it has currently grown to encompass other services. They also run a non-profit charitable fund called the Gender Violence Recovery Center (GVRC). The center provides treatment and psychosocial support to survivors of gender based violence. 

It has branches spreading out to different parts of the country, such as, Hurlingham, Adams, Ongata-Rongai, Kitengela, Nakuru Hyrax, Nakuru CBD, Naivasha, Meru and Mombasa. 

The Aga Khan University Hospital 

The private non profit hospital has been providing services to Kenyans for more than five decades. The hospital has set the standard for comprehensive healthcare and modern medical education in East Africa. Its dedicated staff, advanced facilities and  state of the art technology have won the hospital a great reputation as a leading medical hospital and teaching institution in the region.

The Nairobi Hospital

Founded in 1954, the private hospital is located in Nairobi’s UpperHill area. The hospital started as a treatment center for Europeans only and started treating non-Europeans in the 60s.  It stands out as one of the nation’s top hospitals, attracting talented faculty, staff, superb clinical affiliates and global outlook.

Gertrude’s Children Hospital

Established in 1947 as a pediatric care, the hospital serves nearly 300,000 outpatients annually through a network of 15 hospitals in and around Nairobi. It serves Kenyans as well as those referred by other hospitals across the East African region. It is licensed to provide healthcare to children and teens up to 21 years. Their full range of healthcare services include: accident and emergency, outpatient care, inpatient medical and surgical care, preventive care and rehabilitation services.

It is recognized as a level five hospital. Through the Gertrude Hospital foundation, they work with different partners to provide much needed care to children from less privileged families, especially in informal settlements.  

St. Mary’s Mission Hospital

St Mary’s has two branches: one in Lang’ata, Nairobi and the other in Elementaita, Nakuru. The group of hospitals are owned and managed by the Assumption sisters of Nairobi congregation, ASN. 

Their services include accidents/ emergency and outpatient, inpatient services, laboratory services, ophthalmology, comprehensive care unit, MCH and maternity, radiology and sonography, dental services, and pharmacy services. 

Eldoret Hospital

Eldoret Hospital is a fully fledged medical institution with one of the best facilities, practitioners, and staff in the Rift Valley region. On 1st January 2002, the Eldoret Hospital Doctors Plaza was opened. 

Services offered at the hospital include: 24 hour casualty, pharmacy and laboratory services, a fully equipped major and minor theatre, a radiology and cardiology department, dialysis unit, maternity among others.
