In the vibrant city of Nairobi, DJ Tabz, also known as Tabitha Nyambura, has emerged as a remarkable figure in the gospel music scene.
Unlike most DJs, DJ Tabz is not only a talented music spinner but also a qualified lawyer.
Tabz’s journey into the realm of deejaying started immediately after she completed her high school education.
With a deep love for music and a strong religious upbringing, she decided to enroll in the System Unit Deejay Academy.
However, her path led her to gospel music.
“When I was at school, I wanted to become an artiste and at that time I did a compilation of songs and because I was saved, I chose to do gospel music.” J Tabz, who currently works at KBC, recalled
Yet, there was a deeper calling within her—to become a DJ.
“Deep down I had a conviction to become a DJ, so after completing my studies instead of going for a computer course as other students do I chose deejaying and the rest is history…”
Tabz’s journey hasn’t been without challenges .
In a male-dominated industry, she faced initial resistance from her parents, who were skeptical about her unconventional career choice.
It took eight months of relentless persistence to convince them of her decision.
Her unwavering commitment and numerous achievements in the field gradually turned her parents into her biggest fans.
“Remember your child is a person who has interests. Their choice could be not what you are interested in for them to become, but allow them to do it as long it is something noble and legal because you never know what is destined for their future.” She advised.
She speaks from experience, recognizing that sometimes the most unconventional paths lead to the most fulfilling careers.
One of the most remarkable aspects of DJ Tabz’s life is her ability to balance multiple roles.
Alongside her flourishing deejaying career, she is a licensed lawyer.
This dual identity, though demanding, presents its own set of challenges.
DJ Tabz admits, “I have not been able to figure it out all 100 percent; it is still a learning process on how to balance.”
During her time in law school, she took a four-year sabbatical from deejaying to focus on her studies.
It was an arduous period, but her unwavering dedication paid off.
Today, she has found her niche in both worlds. In her legal career, she specializes in land matters, while her deejaying career continues to thrive.
She believes that finding one’s niche in different areas of life is the key to successfully balancing multiple roles.
“You may not be able to do everything at once because everything may require time, but in every area of life, just find a niche and stick to it,” she advises.
One of the most inspiring aspects of DJ Tabz’s career is her unwavering commitment to gospel music.
Unlike many DJs who diversify their playlists to cater to various audiences, DJ Tabz exclusively plays gospel music.
For her, deejaying is not merely a profession; it’s a ministry.
“I do not only do it for money; it is a ministry for me to spread the word of God. The other side is my love for meeting young girls mostly in high school and university and mentoring them to understand life, its challenges, and how to overcome them,” she passionately explains.
Being a female gospel DJ in a male-dominated industry is not without its challenges. DJ Tabz acknowledges that female DJs often face doubts about their capabilities and are sometimes unfairly compared to their male counterparts.
However, she firmly believes that self-confidence and self-competition are key to reducing the pressure and rising above these challenges.
She advises upcoming female DJs not to give up on their dreams and to remain passionate about their chosen path. Mentorship, she emphasizes, is invaluable in navigating the industry successfully.
DJ Tabz herself was fortunate to have DJ Moh as her mentor, and she encourages others to seek guidance from experienced individuals in the field.
