Lucas Kiiru Ngige’s journey from being a police officer to becoming a successful Jua Kali artisan is a remarkable tale of determination and entrepreneurial spirit.
Through his enterprise, Giltech Fabricators, located in Gilgil, Lucas has not only created employment opportunities for over 60 individuals but has also become a trusted supplier of stainless steel kitchenware to schools, hospitals, and various institutions.
Here is his story as told by WoK.
From Law Enforcement to Jua Kali Artisan
Lucas Kiiru Ngige’s career began in 1991 as a police officer. He served in several units, including the anti-stock theft unit, traffic department, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
During his time in law enforcement, he observed the struggles faced by street vendors and even within the Kiganjo Police Training College when it came to chopping cabbage. This observation sparked a turning point in his life.
The Birth of Giltech Fabricators
When a client approached Lucas with a request for a cabbage chopping machine, he realized that the existing options in the market were prohibitively expensive. Driven by the desire to fulfil the order, Lucas took matters into his own hands.
Despite lacking the necessary skills, tools, and a dedicated workshop, he embarked on a journey of perseverance, crafting the machine himself. Overcoming challenges and being turned away from other workshops, he remained resolute, eventually successfully delivering the machine.
This marked the birth of Giltech Fabricators.
Providing Stainless Steel Solutions
Giltech Fabricators specializes in producing high-quality stainless steel kitchenware. Their product range includes gas cookers, large kitchenware such as vegetable choppers, tea urns, refrigeration products, hot serving pots, and large kitchen burners suitable for institutions.
The durability, functionality, and superior craftsmanship of their products have made them the preferred supplier for hospitals, morgues, hotels, and schools.
Making an Impact during COVID-19
During the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lucas Kiiru Ngige’s expertise and dedication garnered the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Recognizing the crucial role of hand hygiene in combating the virus, Lucas was contracted to fabricate handwashing stations.
However, he faced a significant hurdle in terms of working capital. In a stroke of good fortune, Equity Bank stepped in to support him, providing the necessary funds to fulfill the tender and contribute to the fight against the pandemic.
Expanding Opportunities and Improving Communities
Lucas’s entrepreneurial vision extends beyond the production of stainless steel kitchenware. He has undertaken projects aimed at enhancing school kitchens and dining sets, introducing innovative solutions such as foldable tables.
Embracing digital payment systems has been instrumental in his business, allowing clients to conveniently settle transactions and further streamlining operations.
Empowering the Youth and Technical Education
The ex-cop firmly believes that the Jua Kali sector holds vast opportunities for technical courses and skills development.
As part of his commitment to empowering the youth, he has provided apprenticeship opportunities to high school graduates, equipping them with valuable skills and enhancing their employability.
By investing in the younger generation, Lucas is actively contributing to the growth and development of his community.
