Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is, as his authorized biography is titled, an ‘Enigma’. His name has been synonymous with opposition politics in Kenya and his handshake with foe turned ally President Uhuru Kenyatta was indeed historic. The ODM leader has amassed considerable wealth in his illustrious political career and is considered one of the richest men in Kenya.

We take a look at Raila Odinga’s residences in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

Kisumu Home
Raila’s ‘state house’ is how locals refer to the imposing house in Kanyakwar, Riat Hills overlooking Kisumu International Airport. According to unsubstantiated reports, the house cost kes1 billion to complete.

The stately house has 3 living rooms, 10 bedrooms, four massive kitchens, 2 conferences rooms and offices.

With a total of 74 rooms, Odinga’s address has an Olympic size swimming pool, Jacuzzis and a helipad for two choppers. It took 9 years to complete construction.

“At some point, the PM was under pressure from family members to convert it into a hotel facility but he stuck his ground on the home idea. His will has prevailed to date,” a confidante of the family told a leading daily.

Nyali House
His Nyali residence is not as imposing as his Nairobi and Kisumu homes. The Odinga’s have painted the house blue and Egyptian white as had been directed by Mombasa County Government. Raila has hosted the Head of State in his Nyali home.
