The Contractor and Cost of the Accident Prone Eastern Bypass

In the recent past, members of the public have been raising concerns over the high number of accidents along the Eastern Bypass.

The bypass starts at City Cabanas via Ruai towards Ruiru passing over Thika Road and joining the Northern Bypass.

The latest accident along the road was recorded on Sunday morning, October 30 where at least five people  lost their lives.

In the incident that sparked wild reactions from Kenyans across social media, a Toyota Prado rammed into a Tuk Tuk and a 14-seater matatu killing three people on the spot.

The others are reported to have lost their lives whil he FFM undergoing treatment in hospital.

Speaking to journalists, eye witnesses blamed the rising cases of accidents along the road to lack of road signs, speed bumps and stages for Public Service Vehicles.

Kenyans who have previously used the road also shared their experiences calling the relevant authorities to take immediate action.

At the same time, a section of Kenyans have faulted the road contractor for the state of the road; talking of random U-turns among other faults.

Even as members of the public raise concerns over the state of the road, dualling of the 28km busy road is currently underway with it’s completion scheduled for January 2023.

The contract for the KSh 12.5 billion key road was awarded to China Communication Construction Company Limited last year.

The project is aimed at easing traffic jam on the road that links from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa-Nairobi highway to Thika Superhighway.

The bypass was constructed as a single carriageway.

The China Communication Construction Company Limited is a multinational engineering and construction company engaged in the design, construction and operation of infrastructure assets, including highways, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, oil platforms and marine ports.
