Kabarak University
Kabarak University was established in September 2002 by the late President arap Moi with the aim of meeting the demand of tertiary institutions offering high quality education. The university which sits on 600 acres of land offers various courses in business, theology, science, engineering, technology and education among others. Kabarak University recently sought permission from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to construct a Ksh 35 billion modern hospital in its compound that will be named KUTRMH. The hospital will be a one of a kind in East Africa-with the main hospital equipped with Cancer and Research Centers. Upon its completion, the hospital which will sit on a 100 acre piece of land, will have a 500 bed capacity making it the largest private hospital in Kenya just above Nairobi Hospital which currently has a 355 bed capacity. The hospital is expected to be completed in under three years according to the reports filed by the university.
“The proposed development will be located on LR. No block 10/1920 opposite Kabarak University gate just 20 kilometers away from Nakuru town. The estimated project cost is Ksh 35,049,177,543.95. The development is along Nakuru – Ravine road and the land is privately owned by Kabarak University Trust. The project will sit on a 100 acre piece of land,” the university said in a statement.

The plans to construct the hospital have been ongoing for over a decade now. Canadian firm Minaean SP Construction Corp revealed details of the said hospital last year as it announced that their bid to construct the project had been accepted alongside other bidders.
“The value of the EPC contract is estimated to be approximately Ksh28.1 billion. Strategic partnership agreements anticipated to be negotiated and signed between the two organizations for in-depth involvement in the full execution of the project with other contracts to follow,” the Canadian firm revealed.
Upon its completion, KUTRMH is expected to ease the pressure on the few public hospitals offering cancer treatment such as Kenyatta National Hospital where most cancer patients are admitted.
