Peter Chacha: Migori Farmer Who Transformed 10-Acre Disputed Land Into Thriving Vegetable Paradise

In Kuria East, amidst a history of conflict and insecurity, a beacon of hope and transformation emerged in the form of Peter Chacha.

Armed with determination, resilience, and a modest savings of kSh200,000, Chacha embarked on a journey that would not only change his life but also uplift his entire community.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

The year was 2010 when Chacha, inspired by his passion for agriculture, decided to transform a 10-acre bushy land, once believed to be a criminal’s hideout, into a flourishing vegetable haven.

His vision was not just about personal success but also about catalyzing positive change in Kendege village and the surrounding areas.

To realize his dream, Chacha sought the support of local leaders and, notably, Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama.

With their encouragement and a favorable political climate, he began cultivating a diverse range of crops including cucumber, garlic, onions, cabbages, collards, watermelons, sunflowers, and beetroot.

As of 2020, A 90-kg of cucumbers and courgette earned him Kshh9,000.

He harvested as much as 200 bags of cucumbers and courgette from his vast farm per season.

“The two vegetables take three months to mature and once ready, they are harvested twice weekly. I sell them to Nairobi bound traders who take them at a good price,” he said.

Through meticulous planning and hard work, Chacha’s farm blossomed into a model of smart farming practices.

One of the key elements of his success was his innovative approach to farming. Chacha adopted sustainable techniques that not only maximized yields but also minimized environmental impact.

What truly sets Chacha apart is his commitment to sharing his knowledge and skills. He didn’t keep his expertise to himself; instead, he became a mentor and guide for the youth in his community.

By employing six young individuals, he provided them with opportunities for growth and learning.

Additionally, he offered extension services, educating others about smart farming practices, thereby creating a ripple effect of agricultural knowledge.

Chacha’s dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed. His remarkable achievements were recognized at the prestigious Nairobi International Trade Fair Show in 2019, where he emerged second overall.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Chacha was gifted a motorcycle by Governor Okoth Obado.

“I was motivated by the motorcycle, which I use to access the farm and agriculture workshops,” he says, adding that his passion for farming has greatly exposed him to the world of agriculture.

Beyond the boundaries of his farm, Chacha used his voice and influence to uplift others. He employed a unique approach by utilizing a vernacular radio station to disseminate valuable agricultural knowledge.

Through these efforts, he became a bridge, connecting farmers with vital information and resources.
