Steve Muchiri, the founder of Charleson Group, found his passion for digital marketing during his college years.

Although he couldn’t directly pursue computer science due to his academic grades, his interest in technology led him to explore the vast possibilities of digital marketing.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

Muchiri’s story began during his college years when his fascination with computers and technology ignited a desire to delve into the realm of digital marketing.

Despite facing academic challenges after he scored a B+ in KCSE that prevented him from directly pursuing a computer science course, Muchiri pursued a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, later transitioning to Computer Science.

“I couldn’t directly get to do computer science. That is why I did a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and then later Computer Science,” says Mr Muchiri.

During his studies, he honed his skills through internships, gaining invaluable experience in the corporate world.

In 2015, while interning at an engineering firm, Steve Muchiri identified a significant gap in their marketing strategies.

The company was not harnessing the power of social media to promote its products effectively.

Armed with a proposal for a social media campaign, Muchiri conducted a test on one of the products, resulting in a remarkable 60 percent revenue growth within three months.

“It is at this point that I saw the huge gap could easily fill in the market by offering the same services to other businesses,” he recalled.

Driven by his vision and armed with self-taught digital marketing expertise, Muchiri founded Charleson Group.

Under Muchiri’s adept leadership, Charleson Group expanded its client base, collaborating with over 100 local and international brands, including prominent names like Trans Business Machines and Stedmak Hotels.

One of Muchiri’s significant achievements was his ability to foresee the potential of social media marketing in an era where few companies fully understood its impact.

His innovative strategies not only propelled his business forward but also demonstrated the unparalleled reach and influence of social media platforms.

In 2016, Muchiri made a bold decision to leave college and devote his full attention to building his digital marketing empire.

Looking ahead, Muchiri envisions a future where Charleson Group becomes a digital agency partnering with Fortune 500 companies.

His ambitious goals include listing the company on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and creating employment opportunities for more than 100 young professionals within the next five years.

Muchiri’s vision goes beyond business; it encompasses empowering the youth, fostering innovation, and reshaping the landscape of digital marketing in Kenya and beyond.
