In recent years, a number of Kikuyu comedians have made remarkable career moves, transitioning from the comedy circuit to securing life-changing jobs in popular radio stations. Their unique talent, humor, and ability to connect with audiences have catapulted them to success, making them household names and transforming their lives.
In this article, WoK explores the journeys of five Kikuyu comedians who have found remarkable success in the radio industry, captivating listeners with their wit, charm, and entertaining personalities.
Muthee Kiengei alias Guka wa Nairobi
Muthee Kiengei, known by his on-air name Guka wa Nairobi, has become one of the most sought-after MCs in the country. His career took off in 2006 when he joined street comedy in Nakuru and appeared in several Kikuyu films.
He later joined Kameme FM, a prominent Kikuyu radio station, where he co-hosted the popular show with Gatonye wa Mbugua.
Kiengei’s has also ventured into music which has gained him a massive following and increased his popularity through social media platforms. Besides his radio career, he is the founder of Kiengei Live, an events and entertainment company. He is currently a bishop.
Man Nyari
Born John Njuguna Gicheha, Man Nyari’s exceptional comedic skills displayed during the “Micii ni Ndogo” radio play propelled him to unprecedented popularity, making him an invaluable asset for Kameme FM.
The station recognized his talent and paired him with Njogu Wa Njoroge to co-host the highly acclaimed breakfast show, “Arahuka,” where he played the role of a comedian.
Following Njogu’s departure, Nyari found success on the nightly show, “Thingira Wa Kameme,” where his musical talents, particularly with the guitar, shine.
Additionally, Nyari hosts the immensely popular Saturday breakfast show, “Njanjo Ya Muturire,” which aims to reunite lost family members, and its high ratings led to its recent simulcast on Kameme TV.
Mzee Kihenjo
Mzee Kihenjo, whose real name is Joel Mungai , is a seasoned Kikuyu comedian who has made a mark in the radio industry. Kihenjo, also known as Kizangala, has become a household name in the Kikuyu community. As a popular radio presenter at Kameme FM, he co-hosted the Cajamuka Show with Muthoni Kirumba.
Kihenjo has established himself in the media industry with a strong following on social media and millions of views on his YouTube videos, mostly associated with Kikuyu comedy shows. He has been in the entertainment industry for nearly thirty years, but joining the radio has significantly boosted his popularity.
In the past, he portrayed an older character, dressing in a torn suit and socks, which led many to believe he was an elderly person due to his transformations and the way he walked with a walking stick.
Machang’i Man Solo Papa
He is a well-known Kikuyu comedian with a distinctive style. His performances are characterized by his portrayal of the “Machangi” persona, a humorous representation of a rural Kikuyu man.
Machangi Man Solo Papa’s ability to infuse cultural nuances and social commentary into his acts has made him a popular figure among Kikuyu comedy lovers.
He ventured into the radio industry by joining Kameme FM, where he entertained listeners with his unique brand of humor and captivating storytelling.
Ngoni Wa Thuita
Ngoni Wa Thuita, popularly known as Olematope, is a comical storyteller whose impeccable imitation skills and humor have earned him a devoted following. He co-hosts the afternoon “kwigangara” show alongside Gathaiya Dennis on Kameme FM.
Ngoni Wa Thuita’s ability to mimic various voices, coupled with his comedic timing, has made him a sought-after comedian in the Kikuyu radio scene.
His on-air chemistry with his co-host and their unique music selection for specific days has garnered a loyal fanbase, adding to the success of their show.
